Faqs

Can you polish old or damaged concrete?

When You Can Polish Old Concrete:

  • Surface-Level Damage

    • Minor cracks, stains, or wear can often be ground out during the initial prep stage.

    • Patching or filling small defects is standard practice before polishing.

  • Old or Previously Coated Concrete

    • As long as the coating can be removed (e.g., paint, epoxy), the slab can usually be polished after grinding down to clean concrete.

  • Uneven or Wavy Floors

    • Honing/grinding helps level them out.

Advantages in Cold Climates

Durability

Polished concrete is very hard and resists abrasion, deicing salts, and heavy traffic—ideal for winter wear and tear.

No Peel or Delamination

Unlike coatings or epoxy, there’s nothing to peel off or lift due to freeze/thaw cycles, since it’s mechanically finished.

Radiant Heat Compatibility

Polished concrete works well with in-floor radiant heating systems, which are popular in cold regions.

When It Can Work Outside:

  • In covered or semi-enclosed areas (e.g., patios, breezeways, outdoor kitchens)

  • In dry climates with minimal freeze/thaw cycles

  • On well-drained, sloped surfaces where water doesn’t pool

  • If treated with the right sealer and anti-slip treatment

Appearance

Matte: Low-sheen, subtle, more natural or industrial look. Hides dust and imperfections well.

High-Gloss: Reflective, mirror-like shine. Makes spaces look brighter, sleeker, more modern. Shows off color and aggregate.
